Update - High Schools Invited to Serve as Referral Agencies for 2009 Daniels Scholarship
The Daniels Scholarship Program
One of Bill Daniels’ top priorities in establishing the
Daniels Fund was to provide college scholarships to high school
graduates from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.
About the Daniels Scholarship
Bill Daniels believed in the value of a college education and he wanted deserving young people to have the opportunity to get that education, regardless of their background. When Bill started the Daniels Fund, he felt that scholarship recipients should be diamonds in the rough. He wanted to seek out those students with a clear financial need, but who may not necessarily be at the top of their class. He hoped to discover those who may not have been sought out by other scholarship programs, but who show potential to be successful in college, to become leaders, and to impact their community.
Who can apply?
To be considered for a Daniels Scholarship, a student must be nominated by a Daniels Scholarship Referral Agency. Referral Agencies are college prep providers, high schools, and youth-serving agencies in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming that have been selected and trained to participate in this program.
The Daniels Fund is able to reach the farthest corners of the four states we serve through the Daniels Scholarship Referral Agencies. Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming are divided into regions, and each region is comprised of multiple Referral Agencies. The Referral Agencies are provided a number of nominations to make. A nomination is not a guarantee that a student will be awarded a scholarship; rather, nominations are intended to identify a larger pool of scholarship candidates to compete against other students in the same region for a select number of scholarships.
Important Update - High Schools Added as Referral Agencies
In order to expand access to the Daniels Scholarship for even more deserving students, high schools across the four-state region have been invited to serve as Referral Agencies for the program. Look for more information soon, but for more information please see the letter below.

Preparing Yourself for College
Want to attend college? Not sure what it takes to be “college-ready?” Here are a few tips for success…
Start early! Most colleges expect freshmen to be proficient in communication (writing, reading, speaking), mathematics, humanities (literature, fine arts, foreign language), and science (biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science). You may need to take some of these classes before you graduate high school in order to get into college.
- Review your state’s suggested courses for college admissions with a counselor.
- Research and compare five to eight colleges that you want to attend.
- Attend college fairs.
- Visit college campuses.
- Apply for a pre-college program.
- Practice writing college essays.
- Update or create a résumé.
- Review your high school transcripts.
- Become familiar with college admission requirements.
What is Financial Need?
Eligibility to receive a Daniels Scholarship will be based on the student and his/her family’s ability to demonstrate financial need. Financial need is determined by evaluating a number of factors, including a family’s size, the number of children enrolled in college, a family's income, and the family’s total assets. These details are assessed for all individuals expected to provide financial support for the student (i.e., student, custodial and non-custodial parents, step-parents, and legal guardians).
In general, an average family of four, with one child in college, and a family income of $50,000 or less, has a reasonable opportunity to qualify for financial eligibility. This is only an example. There are a variety of situations and extenuating circumstances that may present a reasonable opportunity for you to qualify for financial eligibility.
Thank you for your interest in the Daniels Scholarship program.
