Education Nation highlights Education Reform in Colorado
NBC News brings an education power week to Denver starting April 12th with a series of education-focused events and programmingThursday, April 05, 2012
NEW YORK, NY— April 5, 2012— In an effort to continue the national conversation sparked with its “Education Nation” initiative, NBC News is continuing “Education Nation On-The-Road” for the spring of 2012. Making its first stop in Denver beginning April 12th, the NBC News team will spend a week in the city, partnering with its affiliate station, 9NEWS, and its sister networks, MSNBC and Telemundo affiliate KDEN, to create a public dialogue around education issues faced by the region. During the week, NBC News and its partner stations will air education-focused programming and host a series of special events that bring Denver-area educators, elected officials, business leaders, parents and students together to share information, exchange ideas and inspire change. All events will be hosted at the History Colorado Center in Denver.
“Improving our schools and the student experience is critical for Colorado’s future success. ‘Education Nation’ is a great opportunity to bring the community together to discuss what’s best for our kids and how to prepare them to enter today’s modern workforce,” said Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.
“We’re very pleased to have a chance to highlight and discuss the innovative, student-centered reforms and partnerships we’ve been forging here in Denver,” DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg said. “There’s still a great deal of work and improvements ahead, and we’re very excited to host the launch of the Education Nation tour and talk with education leaders from across the country about the ways we can better serve our kids and families.”
To kick off “Education Nation Denver,” onThursday, April 12at 12:00pm/mst, Lt. Governor Joe Garcia, Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, and DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg will join the NBC News and 9NEWS team at the officialOpening Ceremony. Portions of the event will be broadcast live on 9NEWS.
OnSunday, April 15, at 3:30pm/mst, NBC News will host a special panel looking at 3rd grade literacy, the important role it plays in a child's education and what Colorado schools are doing to make sure students are able to read at grade-level. This panel will be moderated by NBC News Chief Education Correspondent Rehema Ellis and will air on Channel 20 on Thursday, April 19th at 7:00pm/mst.
At 6:00pm/mst on Sunday, Rehema Ellis and 9NEWS’ Nelson Garcia and Nick McGurk will lead a liveTeacher Town Hallforum from the History Colorado Center that brings together local teachers of all levels for a frank and open discussion about what works in the classroom and how to address the top challenges facing the region’s education system. Teachers will be invited to participate in-person or via webcast with the ability to provide comments and feedback through EducationNation.comand social media platforms. The full Teacher Town Hall will be broadcast live on Channel 20 and streamed live on EducationNation.com.
OnMonday, April 16th, from 1:00-2:00pm/et (11:00-12:00pm/mst), MSNBC’s“Andrea Mitchell Reports” will air live from the History Colorado Center, and will feature a segment on education as part of the “Education Nation On-The-Road” tour.
Then at12:30pm/mstonMonday, Denver-area leading business and civic leaders will gather at the History Colorado Center forJob One: Preparing America to Compete in the 21st Century, a moderated panel discussion led by NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell. Panelists and guests will share ideas and recommendations for ensuring the region’s students and workforce have a competitive edge in our global economy. Portions of the “Job One” event will be broadcast live on 9NEWS and streamed live on EducationNation.com.
NBC News and 9NEWS will celebrate Education Nation’s stop in Denver by partnering with the History Colorado Center, Denver Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature & Science to unlock unique learning opportunities for families, students and other visitors. In addition to these events, from April 11-20, the “Education Nation Express” bus will travel throughout the region as 9NEWS Education Reporter Nelson Garcia highlights examples of education innovation in action.
