Salt Lake Arts Academy Receives Capital Improvements Grant
(Salt Lake City, UT) – Salt Lake Arts Academy (SLArts) has received a $102,000 Daniels Fund grant to furnish classrooms, buy technology and make capital improvements to the school, the largest single gift the school has ever received. SLArts is a free public charter school, serving grades five through eight, in downtown Salt Lake City.
“This support from the Daniels Fund comes at a critical juncture for our school,” said Amy Wadsworth, principal. “We are increasing enrollment to the full capacity of our charter next fall, and are working to make sure our newly-expanded facility is ready for all our students, and particularly for the new students we will be adding to our rolls.” SLArts currently enrolls 300 fifth- through eighth-graders; in the fall the school’s enrollment will expand to 380.
SLArts recently completed a 10,600 square foot “core-and-shell” addition to its school building at 844 South 200 East. The “Arts Wing” addition was primarily funded by a $4.6 million charter school bond. The school must raise the remaining funding for equipment, furnishings and other capital needs from private sources. The Arts Wing contains dedicated classrooms for music, dance, drama and visual arts as well as a large Commons Rooms space that will eventually be outfitted as a small, Black Box theatre space, available for rent to other nonprofit groups.
Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television known for his kindness and generosity to those in need, established the Daniels Fund to provide grants and scholarships in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. For more information, please visit www.danielsfund.org.
SLArts is one of the oldest charter schools in Utah, founded in 2003, and is entering its tenth year of operation. It is the only charter school in the state focusing exclusively on the middle school grades, offering arts-integrated education. Students are admitted by lottery, and the school currently has more than 200 students on the waiting list for the 2013-14 school year. Fore more information, visit www.slarts.org.
