Grant purpose: To support the Colorado Senior Connections program which provides the tools and supportive services for seniors to age in place.
How this organization is helping make lives better: JFS of Colorado is a pioneer in the area of innovative programs and services for the aging. The organization has acquired national recognition for its leadership role in identifying, testing, and establishing the first Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) model, called Colorado Senior Connections. Colorado Senior Connections enables seniors to remain independent in their own homes by providing programs to them for in-home and personal care assistance, wellness and fitness, transportation, volunteering, preventative and education, agency and referral services, care management, and social activities. JFS has recently expanded the program to include three residential communities, serving 350 seniors in 2008. The seniors served average an age of 72 and an annual income of $11,500.
Story of a life made better:
When Harry’s wife Sophie passed away, he lost his best friend and caregiver. With Sophie gone and his baby boomer son, Michael living out of state, Harry was truly on his own. Under a doctor’s care for cardiovascular problems, he felt hopeless and helpless about the prospect of moving into a nursing home. After a thorough assessment, Jewish Family Service stepped in to provide Harry with “assisted living at home” services that help him live safely and comfortably in his own home. He receives home care and personal care provider services and kosher meals on wheels.
